Melons Have Ripened

Mariia Markivna Dzhahupova was a painter and graphic artist. Born on September 15, 1897 in Armavir, she studied at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts in Petrograd (1915-1917) under I.Ya. Bilibin, M.P. Khimona, as well as in the workshop of F.I. Rerberg in Moscow (until 1925). In 1930, she worked with K.S. Malevich. She painted landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and thematic compositions. She was the creator of the paintings: "In the Field" (1934), "Self-Portrait" (1934), "Flowers" (1937), "Still Life with Pomegranates" (1954, tempera), "Vegetables" (1958, tempera), "Evelina" (1958), "Teacher" (1967), "Kuban Collective Farmer" (1968), "Bouquet of Flowers" (1969), "Woman Architect at Construction Site" (1970); a series of landscapes of Baku (1938), Kabardino-Balkaria (1934-1940), Crimea (1930-1940), Krasnodar Territory (1930-1950s), Leningrad (1950-1960s), and Palanga (1960, tempera). In 1930-1937, she made drawings for fabrics, and in 1942-1944, campaign posters. From the second half of the 1950s, she worked a great deal in the technique of color lithography. She made a series of illustrations for "Selected Stories" by D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak and the Russian folk tale "Kolobok". Starting in 1932, she participated in exhibitions. A member of the Union of Artists of the USSR, she taught at the Armavir Art Vocational and Technical School (1925-1928). Her works are in museums in Russia and Ukraine. She lived and died in Leningrad in 1975.
