Serhii Oleksiiovych Barannyk is a Ukrainian artist, a member of the Union of Soviet Artists of Ukraine since 1987, and a member of the creative group “Mariupol-87.” He has served as Chairman of the Mariupol branch of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine since 2003. He received the title of Honoured Artist of Ukraine in 2009. Born on 21 October 1952 in Oleksandrivsk-Sakhalinskyi, Sakhalin Island, he lived in Mariupol since 1962. He received a secondary education. The artist works in easel and monumental painting and graphic art. He co-founded the Mariupol alternative art society. Since 1976, he has participated in city, regional, all-Ukrainian, all-Union, and international art exhibitions. Selected works include "Sign of Misfortune" (1987), "Sign of Longing" (1996), "Sign of Rest" (1998), and "Sign of Family" (1999). Some of his works are held in the collections of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, as well as in museums and private collections in Ukraine, Poland, Palestine, Italy, Canada, Germany, the United States, and France.

In the center - two girls, full-length, standing side by side. The girl on the left is dressed in old Russian clothing, with a headscarf, hands folded on her chest. Her head is turned three-quarters to the left. The girl on the right — our contemporary — wears a dress with bare shoulders. Her left arm is extended along her body, her right hand touches the hair on her left shoulder. Her head is turned three-quarters to the right. To the left and right of the girls are the walls of a building painted with decorative frescoes. Above their heads — the symbol of our time — a spacecraft. Bottom right: signature and date. On the reverse, top right, inscription: DKhPK, Zhdaniv city, Artema St., bldg. 118, apt. 30, Barannyk S.O., born in 1952.
