Matvii Borysovych Kohan-Shats was a Ukrainian painter. He was born on October 25 (November 7), 1911 in the city of Mogilev-Podilskyi (now Vinnytsia region, Ukraine). He studied at the Odesa Art Institute, which was later merged with the Kyiv Institute. In 1939, he graduated from the Kyiv Art Institute, where his teachers in the specialty were Pavlo Volokydin and Oleksii Shovkunenko. He lived and worked in Kyiv. His paintings are mainly landscapes in a realistic style. Starting in 1939, he participated in regional, republic, and all-Union exhibitions, including foreign ones - Italy, France, Yugoslavia (1968), and Japan (1970). Personal exhibitions of Kohan-Shats were held in Kyiv after the artist's death (1991, 2001). Selected works include "Morning on the Dnipro" (1947), "Autumn" (1962), "On Taras' Mount" (1964), "May Rain" (1968), and "March" (1973). His works are presented in many museums of Ukraine, including the National Art Museum of Ukraine and the National Museum of Taras Shevchenko. He died in Kyiv on August 21, 1989.

In the foreground, there is a blooming meadow, followed by trees and shrubs. Further back, a strip of river is visible. Near the high horizon, a blue band separates the light blue sky from the green meadows. In the lower right corner, the artist’s signature reads: "Kogan 1973".
