Oleksii Oleksiiovych Shovkunenko was a Ukrainian painter, graphic artist. Born on March 9 (21), 1884 in Kherson. Graduated from the Odesa Art School (1908). Studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1909 to 1917). His teachers were K. Kostandi and D. Krainev. Worked in the field of easel painting. From 1913 to 1919 he participated in exhibitions of the Society of South Russian Artists. Participated in republic exhibitions starting in 1927, all-Union - starting in 1939, foreign - starting in 1932. His main works include series of watercolors "Odesa Shipyard" (1929 to 1930); "Dniprostan" (1930 to 1932); portraits of Ukrainian scientists and cultural figures - P. Tychyna, M. Rylskyi, Yu. Yanovskyi, M. Litvinenko-Volhemut, B. Yakovlev, M. Lysenko, etc. (1945 to 1947); a series of landscapes of Ukraine, Moldova, the Caucasus, Kabardino-Balkaria, Bashkiria, etc. People's Artist of the USSR (1944). Teacher at the Odesa Polytechnic School of Fine Arts (starting in 1926), the Odesa Art Institute (starting in 1929) and the Kyiv Art Institute (1936 to 1965). His works are kept in numerous museums and private collections in Ukraine and abroad. Lived and worked in Kyiv. Died on March 12, 1974. The Kherson Art Museum is named after the artist.
