Mykola Petrovych Hlushchenko was a painter, graphic artist, and public figure. Born on September 4 (17), 1901 in the city of Novomoskovsk, Ekaterinoslav province, now Dnipropetrovsk region, he graduated from the Berlin Higher School of Fine Arts in Charlottenburg (1924). Hlushchenko worked in the field of easel painting, mainly in the genres of landscape, still life, and portrait. An Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1946) and People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1963) and the USSR (1976), he participated in regional (1949), republic (1943), all-Union (1935), international (1926), and personal (1924) exhibitions. His personal exhibitions were held in Paris (1926, 1928), Bucharest (1930), Prague (1931), Lviv (1935), Moscow (1943, 1986), Kyiv (1949, 1958, 1976, 2001), and Brussels (1969). His main works include the portraits "O. Dovzhenko" (1922), "Chess Players" (1923), "Self-Portrait" (1923, 1935), a portrait of R. Rolland (1934), "A Woman Sitting" (1934); cycles of illustrations for the poem "Dead Souls" by M. Gogol (1930-1931) and the story "Fata Morgana" by M. Kotsiubynsky (1933); and the series "Defense of Moscow" (1941), "Kyiv after Liberation" (1944), "Landscapes of Ukraine" (1969-1971), "Festive Still Lifes" (1970), "Crimean Vineyards" (1974), and "Ukrainian Flowers" (1977). His works are kept in museums in Ukraine, France, the USA, Canada, and Italy. The artist's workshop-museum was opened in Kyiv (1978). Hlushchenko lived and worked in Kyiv and died on October 31, 1977.
