Hryhorii Zinoviiovych Kryzhevskyi was a Ukrainian painter, teacher, Honored Artist of Ukraine (1974), participant of World War II, and member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. Born on December 15, 1918 in Kharkiv (now Ukraine), from 1934-1939, he studied at the Kharkiv Art School (teacher V.F. Yatsenko). In 1939, he entered the Kharkiv Art Institute, but his studies were interrupted by the war. He fought in the war and was wounded. In 1951, Kryzhevskyi graduated from the institute with honors (where he studied at the workshop of the battle painter Professor H.O. Bodarenko, under teachers M.H. Derehus and P.I. Kotov). After graduating from the institute, he was appointed director of the Odesa Art School (1951-1958). From then, he lived and worked in Odesa. From 1949, he participated in art exhibitions. During his creative life, Kryzhevskyi held more than 30 personal exhibitions. Starting in 1965, G. Kryzhevskyi's works were exhibited at exhibitions of Soviet art abroad (in Egypt, Bulgaria, Hungary, France, Italy, USA, Belgium, Poland, Spain, Finland, Czechoslovakia, and Romania). He created thematic paintings, still lifes, landscapes, and portraits, but his talent was most clearly manifested in the landscape genre. Among his works are "Comrade" (1959), "Yachts on the Shore" (1962), "Medical Battalion" (1967), "Late Autumn" (1980), "Odesa Estuaries" (1986), "Last Still Life" (1992), and others. The artist's works have become the property of 45 museums in Ukraine, and are also kept in museums, galleries and private collections in many countries of the world. He died on September 9, 1992 in Odesa.
