Yurii Serhiiovych Komendant was a Ukrainian artist, painter, graphic artist, Honored Artist of Ukraine (2005), and member of the National Union of Ukrainian Artists (1972). Born on July 8, 1926 in the village of Avdiyivka (now a city in Donetsk region, Ukraine), in 1956, he graduated from the Kyiv Art Institute, where his teachers in the specialty were V. Kostetskyi and I. Shtilman. From then on, he worked in Donetsk in the field of easel painting. Komendant created portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and thematic paintings in the traditional technique of oil painting. He was a participant in regional, all-Ukrainian, and all-Union exhibitions starting in 1957. His personal exhibitions were held in Donetsk (1990, 1993, 1997, 1999). Komendant's pastel landscapes and still lifes are painted in an expressive manner. Among his works are "Morning on the Dnipro" (1961), "The Storm Petrel" (1970), "Poppies" (1978), "In the Hour of Silence" (1987), "Fresh Wind" (2001), and others. He died on March 16, 2009 in Donetsk. Some of his works are kept in museums and galleries of Ukraine.
