Danylo Yakovych Cherkes was a Soviet marine painter, portraitist, master of still life, landscape. Born on August 31, 1899 in Moscow. In 1918 he entered VKHUTEMAS (workshop of S.V. Maliutin). He took part in the Civil War. Later he worked as a decorator in the theater. In 1923 he graduated from VKHUTEMAS (Higher Art and Technical Workshops). He worked in the field of easel painting and graphics. Starting in 1932 he participated in art exhibitions annually. Among his works are triptych "In the North", a series of landscapes of Crimea, a series of landscapes of northern Russia, "Pereyaslav Lake", "Smolny Monastery", "Segezha. Karelia", Leningrad (series of sketches), "Portrait of a Mother", "Self-portrait", "Azov Barges" , and many others. He died on June 9, 1971 in Moscow. His works are held in many museum and private collections in the post-Soviet space.
