Leonid Ivanovych Chernov was a Ukrainian Soviet artist, teacher, member of the Kharkiv branch of the Union of Artists of Ukraine starting in 1943. Born on June 6 (19), 1915 in the city of Starobilsk, Kharkiv province (now Kharkiv region, Ukraine). From 1934 to 1937 he studied at the Kharkiv Art School, in 1937 to 1942 - at the Kharkiv Art Institute. His teachers were M. Kozyk, O. Kokel, M. Samokysh. From 1944 to 1947 - director of the Kharkiv State Art School, in 1947 to 1963 - teacher of the Kharkiv Art Institute, starting in 1963 - teacher of the Kharkiv Art and Industrial Institute. Associate professor starting in 1961, professor starting in 1977. He worked in the field of easel painting and easel graphics (autolithography, etchings, watercolors), creating landscapes and portraits. Participant of all-Ukrainian, all-Union, international exhibitions starting in 1945. Personal exhibitions: Kharkiv (1944, 1952, 1957 to 1959, 1965 to 1968, 1982, 1993), Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Lviv, Chernivtsi, Odesa (1957 to 1959, 1965 to 1968), Sumy (1965 to 1968), Starobilsk (1977). Among his works are paintings - "Spring Morning", "Wind", "Natalochka", "Mother", "Azov Region", "Evening Song"; graphic series - "In the Carpathians", "Around Bulgaria", "On the Sea of Azov", "Around India", "By the Temple", and others and died on October 24, 1990 in Kharkiv. The artist's works are kept in many museum and private collections in Ukraine and abroad.
