Serhii Oleksiiovych Hryhoriev was a painter and graphic artist. Born on June 22 (July 5), 1910 in the city of Luhansk, he graduated from the Zaporizhzhia Art Vocational School (1926), the Higher Art and Technical Workshops (VKHUTEMAS) in Moscow (1926-1927), and the Kyiv Art Institute (1932). His teachers by profession were V. Neva, M. Kuznietsov, M. Kupriianov, L. Bruni, V. Favorskyi, F. Krasytskyi, V. Denysov, Ye. Sahaidachnyi, and F. Krychevskyi. Hryhoriev worked in the field of easel painting. The influence of impressionism is noted in his work. In genre paintings, he proved himself as a representative of realism. Dramatic and psychological motifs prevail in his works. He was an Honored Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1948), a People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1951), a corresponding member (1953) and then a full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1958), and a People's Artist of the USSR (1974). Hryhoriev aught at the Kyiv Art Institute and headed the painting workshop that he created (1950). He participated in foreign (1933), republic (1935), and all-Union (1937) exhibitions. His main works include "On the Shore" (1937), "At the Meeting" (1947), "Discussion about the Duo" (1950), "Returned" (1953), "Behind the Book" (1958), "Native Mother", "Children" (1970), "Olya" (1972), "Peaceful Land" (1975), "Autumn in Zaspa" (1976), "Sister and Brother" (1985), and others. His works are kept in museums in Ukraine, Russia, Bulgaria, and Japan. Hryhoriev lived and worked in Kyiv and died on April 9, 1988.
